A piece can be perfectly playable on guitar and still sit in the wrong key.
The chords may fit. The melody may be present. Nothing looks impossible. Yet the result feels cramped: the bass has lost its direction, the melody keeps disappearing into the middle strings, and every sustained note is interrupted by the next left-hand movement.
For a guitarist, a key is more than a collection of pitches. It is a physical layout. It decides which notes are open, which basses are available, where the melody lies on the fingerboard and how much of the harmony can continue ringing. In a solo fingerstyle arrangement, it also affects whether the thumb can maintain a convincing bass while the fingers shape a melody above it.
The right key is therefore not always the original key, the easiest key or the one with the most open strings. It is the one that gives the important parts of the music room to behave like themselves.
The key is also a map of the instrument
At sounding pitch, the guitar's open strings in standard tuning are E2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4. Guitar notation is normally written an octave higher. The tuning pattern makes some pitches physically convenient and places others behind a shift, stretch or barre.
Move an arrangement by a semitone and its musical relationships remain intact, but its geography changes. An open bass becomes fretted. A natural melody fingering may turn into repeated shifts. Transposition produces the new pitches; the fingering, resonance and balance still need a new solution.
Begin with the melody, not the chord shapes
Chord diagrams are quick to test, so they often determine the first choice of key. For solo guitar, they are only part of the problem.
Find the highest and lowest important melody notes before settling on accompaniment shapes. Then check where the melody spends most of its time. A melody can fit within the guitar's range but still occupy an unhelpful register.
Too low, and it competes with the bass and inner notes. The listener hears a block of harmony rather than a line above it. Too high, and the arrangement may depend on constant shifts or lose the warmer colour that made the melody attractive in the first place.
A useful melody position leaves space underneath it. Inner-voice melodies can work beautifully, but their hierarchy still has to be audible. Play the melody alone in two or three possible keys. Notice where a string change interrupts the line and where a note can continue ringing. That reveals more than a comparison of familiar chord shapes.
The bass line sets the floor
After the melody, test the structural bass notes.
Some arrangements need only an occasional root or fifth. Others depend on a moving bass that acts as a second line. A key may serve the melody and still fail if the bass lies too low or forces the left hand to abandon the upper voices.
Open E, A and D are especially useful bass resources in standard tuning, but they are not automatically the correct notes. A low open string can sound full while pulling the harmony in the wrong direction. Repeating an available root can also flatten a bass line that originally had its own contour.
E, A and D offer open root basses in their namesake keys. G and C do not: their lowest standard tonic notes are fretted. That narrow fact can guide a first test, but it does not rank the keys. A fretted bass, an inversion or a lighter texture may serve the music better than an available open root.
Play the bass by itself, then combine only bass and melody. This exposes collisions hidden by a full texture: a bass that ends too soon, a shift that cuts off the melody, or two lines that need the same finger. The middle notes can wait.
Open strings give something and take something
Open strings can make an arrangement feel larger than the number of notes being played. They may continue while the left hand moves, reinforce a bass and create sympathetic response elsewhere in the instrument.
They also have their own timing. An open string cannot be shortened by simply lifting a fretting finger. Its colour may stand apart from surrounding fretted notes, and it can continue into the next harmony unless either hand stops it.
This makes open strings resources, not prizes. The aim is not to collect as many as possible.
The best key may offer several open strings and use them selectively. Another key may have fewer obvious resonances but give the player better control over colour and note length.
The same pitch can behave differently
Most pitches in the guitar's central register can be played in more than one place. Staying on one string can preserve colour but require larger shifts. Crossing strings may ease the fingering and allow overlap, yet alter the attack. A passage is not comfortable merely because every chord can be held; test the transitions between them as well.
